Inductees

For the past 60 years, The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame has honored and inducted over 780 incredible men and women who have made a lasting impact in Pennsylvania through extraordinary athletic achievement and contributions. Whether these activities have been achieved on or off the field, we honor them. Through our future virtual museum, we educate and celebrate their achievements for years to come.

The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame’s 2025 Induction Ceremony and Dinner is Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 6:00 pm at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel.

Graduate of Notre Dame 1974. Three-year letterman as running back and punt returner. Held Notre Dame kick return record. Mr. Carmel High School graduate 1970. Honor Student 8th of 247. Greatest running back in school’s history. Highest scorer 473 points, most touchdowns in a season 38, then a state record. All-American Scholastic Magazine, Sunkist Growers, Scholastic Coach Magazine, and Sr. Scholastic Magazine. First team All-State, AP and UP, Big 33. Greatest sprinter in school’s history. Held school’s long jump record and stadium long jump record along with Barney Ewell of Lancaster at 22’ 6” until broken by his brother Mike in 1985.

Starting 2nd Baseman 3 World Series, 1982, 1985, and 1987 with St. Louis Cardinals 1981-88. National League All-Star Team 1985. Player of the Year 1989. Played with Minnesota, N. Y. Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies 1989-91. 100 RBI’s 1987. One of top 11 National League hitters 1989. Outstanding four-sport Athlete in High School (Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track). Held single game basketball scoring record of 41 points for 20 years.

Billy "Whiteshoes" Johnson

Played scholastically at Upper Chichester High 1966-70. All-Delaware County 1969. Widener University 1971-1975. Little All-American 1974-75. Starred for Houston Oilers. Named to NFL all-time team as punt returner 1994. Pro-Bowl 1975-77-83. Come-back Player of the Year and all NFL by Sporting News. Named All-NFL by associated press 1977-78. Currently with Atlanta Falcons front office.

Thomas W. "Mickey" Minnich

Staunch supporter of Education and Sports. Graduate Gettysburg College, Masters from Shippensburg University. Certification in secondary education from Western Maryland. Served as Assistant Principal, acting superintendent, and head football coach for two #1 ranked teams in state. In 1985 Mikey became executive director of the Big 33 Football Classic, which has generated over 1 million dollars in scholarships under his direction. He was a coordinator of summer recreation programs for the city of Harrisburg. He was a football coach for 16 years compiling a record of 77-8-3. Served as track and field coach with a record of 29-1. Outstanding Young Man of Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce Award 1969. Selected Coach of the Year 5 times.

Mike "Mike" Munchak

Assistant Coach of Houston Oilers. Twelve seasons as All-Pro offensive guard with the Houston Oilers. Nine Pro Bowl Games. All-NFL team for 9 seasons starting in 1985. Named to the NFL’s Team of the Decade for 1980’s. Member of Oilers anniversary dream team in 1989. Had jersey retired by Oilers in 1994. Honors graduate from Penn State in 1982. All-American guard at Penn State. MVP in Olympia Gold Bowl Game. AP All-Star in High School at Scranton Central. Member of Eastern Conference Championship team in Senior season. Received 72 scholarship offers and was an Adidas All-American.

Bernie S. Sabol

Outstanding linebacker and guard at Coal Twp. High School. Named 1st team all-state (1959) High School. Named All-American and played in Big 33 Game. Participated in Gator Bowl and Liberty Bowl games. All-East Squad while earning 3 letters under coach Rip Engle. Assistant coach at Allegheny College and later head coach at Mansfield University 1969-1977. Currently associate athletic director at Mansfield University.

Michael "Mickey" Shuler

Played in NFL 14 years. New York Jets 1978-89, Philadelphia Eagles 1990-91. NFL All-Pro 1987, 1988. NFL regular season statistics: 462 receptions, 5100 yards, 37 TDs. Played in 8 playoff games. Penn State 1974-78. 1977-78 2nd Team All-American, 1st Team All-East. Played in Sugar, Gator, Fiesta, Hula, and Japan Bowls. East Pennsboro High School: 1st Team All-State 1973-74. Played for PA Big 33 in win over Ohio.

Richard Tracewski

Active in professional baseball for 42 years. Played with Tom Lasorda and worked for Sparky Anderson. Retired as first base coach with Detroit after 1995 season. Played at all levels of pro ball from Class A to major leagues. Played shortstop, with Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers. Participated in four World Series. Member of the Detroit coaching staff in 1984.

William Henry "Lonestar" Dietz

Born of proud Sioux heritage, an offensive and defensive tackle on the great Carlisle team of 1911. Played 60 minutes of every game at Carlisle 1909-1912. Coached Washington State Agr. College to a 14-0 win over national power Brown University in the first Rose Bowl Game Jan. 1, 1916. Assistant to Pop Warner at Stanford and two Rose Bowl wins in 1925 and 1927. A consultant to Knute Rockne and many other famous coaches. Damom Runyan called him the “Coaches Coach.” Named Head Football Coach at Albright College, replacing Biggie Munn in 1937. Led Albright to first undefeated team in 53 years. His lifetime record was 183-73-16.

National Coach of the Year 1960 in leading Yale University to a 9-0 season. Coached Yale to two Ivy League Championships in 1956 and 1960. Shared the Lambert Trophy in 1956. Acknowledged creator of offense that was the forerunner of NFL pro-style passing offense. Overall record at Yale was 61-32-6. Honorable mention as player at Villanova and later coached them to a 33-20 record. Brought Loyola University (CA) to national ranking in 1949-51. Member of the Villanova, Loyola, and Helms Foundation Halls of Fame.

Carl F Barger

Carl was a 2-year letterman at Shippensburg University in 1951-52. Served as a 1st Li. In the us Army in 192-54, Graduating first in his officers training class. In 1855-58 He attended Dickinson Law school, graduating summa cum laude. In 1986 he led a public-private coalition that purchased the Pittsburgh Pirates from the Galbreath family to keep the team in Pittsburgh. Served as General Counsel until elected President and Chief Operating Officer of the Pirates. It was during Carl’s tenure that the Pirates had 3 Division Championships. In 1992 he was named President and Chief Operating officer of the Florida Marlins

Charlotte R "Rusty" Grubic-Gustin

World Champion Women’s Bowler in 1956. Started bowling Career in 1941. Participated in 12 State Tournaments, In1956, she bowled a 714 series in league competition. In 1957, in National Qualifying she finished in 2nd place. In 1958 invited among top 64 world to World Invitational Competition in Chicago where she beat Elvira Topefer for Women’s World Bowling Championship

Nathan E. "Ed" Ott

Signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1970. Played with the Pirates from 1974-1980. Pirates’ regular catcher in 1979 World Series. Scored winning run in championship game against Baltimore. Joined the California Angels for 1980-81 seasons. Rotator cuff and knee injuries Forced active retirement.

Managed in the minors at Edmonton Canada; Manassas, Virginia and Watertown, New York. Coached with Houston Astros until his retirement in 1993.

Outstanding football player at Brownsville High School. Went to Penn State where he earned All-East end honors 3 times, co-captain of undefeated 1948 Cotton Bowl Team. He spent 9 months in a POW Camp in WWII after being shot down over Germany.

Head Football Coach at Albright College for 30 years compiling a record of 144-122-5, 1955-1984. NCAA District Coach-of-the-Year 1959 and 1960. Coached Albright to 7 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC)
North Title, was MAC Coach-of-the-Year 6 times. Led Albright to then nations’ longest football winning streak, 21 games.

Manuel E. "Manny" Sanguillen

Signed by Pittsburgh Pirates as a free agent in 1964. Played with Pittsburgh 1967, 1969-1976, Oakland 1977 and Pittsburgh 1978-1980. Career totals of .2pg average, 65 home runs and 585 RBI’s. Played 12 seasons with Pirates; 5 League Championships, 2 World Series, batting 12 for 32 (.375) in World Series. Named to play in three All-Star Games, Played in 1,037 games as a catcher with the Pirates. Named to AP Major league Team in 1971.

Michael Scarry

In 1944-45 played for Cleveland Rams. In 1945, Captain, NFL Title and named All-Pro. In 1946-47 he played on their All-American Conference title team, name captain and All-Pro. Mo spent 12 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. Mo had starred at Waynesburg College and in 1963 he returned to become Waynesburg College Athletic Director , Head Football and Basketball Coach 1963-65. Wshington Redskins Defensive Coach 1966-68, scout for 49’rs 1969, Miami Dolphins 1970-85 – 5 Super Bowls. Named to NAIA Hall of Fame in 1964.Athlete

Distinguished University of Pittsburgh Military Graduate-Army ROTC 1957. Served in Vietnam, Thailand, and Germany. Retired U. S. Army Lieutenant Colonel.

Richard A. "Dick" Allen

Played 15 years in the National and American Leagues. He was the 1972 MVP in the American League with a batting average of .308 and 37 Home runs. In 1964 he was the National League’s Rookie of the Year batting .318 and hitting 29 home runs. He played 6 years with the Phillies, moved to Los Angeles, the Chicago White Sox and back to the Phillies before ending his career with the Oakland Athletics.

In 1977. He was a 7- time All-Star with a lifetime batting average of .292. Richie was an All-State Basketball player at Wampum High School.

Played college football at Juniata College. His 185 regular Season victories ranked 6th All-Tlme. In 1993 he became The 8th 20-season hed coach in NFL history. NFL Coach-of-the-Year 4 times. AFC Coach-of-the-Year in 11n 1984 and 1984. Only coach in NFL history th win Division Championships for 3 different franchises. In 1992 he became only the gth head coach to coach in 300 games.

At Cathedral Prep High School in Erie Michael was All-City, All-State, Big 33, Parade Magazine High School; All-American. Entered Notre Dame University in 1966. Consensus All-American, UPI Lineman-of-the-Year, Cotton Bowl versus Texas. Co-Captain Coaches All American Game, Ernie Davis Award, Co-Captain of the College All-Star Game. 6th place in Heisman Trophy voting and 1st Round draft choice by Green Bay Packers in 1970. Spent 11-years in the NFL with Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, and New York Giants.
All Pro in 1974, 1976Dodge NFL Man-of-the Year.

Tom, after a 5-sports career at Reading Central Catholic High School moved on to Columbia University. Sportswriter “Red” Smith tagged him “Little Poison” after he batted .414 as a Freshmen (1948) and shared Columbia’s home run record with two others, including Lou Gehrig. His 47% field goal shooting percentage led the nation at guard for 4th ranked Columbia and its first undefeated regular season in 50 year ivy league history, won 31 straight. Selected All Ivy, NYC All-Stars (with Al McGuire) and 1st Team in Division 1 NCAA Tournament (1952) Continued stand out play in service, named to Stars and Stripes World- Wide All- Star Team (1954), USAF All American, 3rd Marine Division “All Opponent Team” Named to Columbia University’s All-Time (50 year) Basketball and Baseball Teams.

Mark Duda

A graduate of Wyoming Valley West High School in Plymouth, Duda starred in football in high school. In 1979, he was awarded a full sports (football) scholarship to the University of Maryland, and enrolled in the General Studies Degree Program. In 1983, he was drafted into the National Football League by the St. Louis/Phoenix Football Cardinals and withdrew before completing my degree. He was selected to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference; Coaches All-American Second Team; All ACC Player of the Week vs. North Carolina State and North Carolina; Starting Defensive Lineman, East-West Shrine Bowl, Palo Alto, California; Aloha Bowl, Honolulu, Hawaii; Tangerine Bowl, Orlando, Florida; All-American Strength Team; Strongest Terp Award; University of Maryland Career Sack Record Holder.

He was chosen in the fourth round of the 1983 National Football League draft. Mark started seven games at defensive tackle as a rookie, received three game balls vs. Washington, Dallas, and New Orleans. In 1985 he was second on the team with 7.5 quarterback sacks, and led the defensive line in tackles. Following his retirement from professional football in 1988, he returned to college at East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.

In May, 1991, he acquired a B.S. in Physical Education (Pedagogy Concentration), graduating cum laude. He is presently enrolled in the School Counseling graduate degree program at the University of Scranton, Scranton, Pennsylvania. Mark was a defensive line coach for two years at East Stroudsburg University, and spent one year as defensive coordinator for one of the Wilkes-Barre high schools, Meyers, before coming to Lackawanna Junior College. He was appointed enrollment advisor and head football coach at Lackawanna Junior College in March, 1994, after a year as the college’s assistant football coach and defensive coordinator. He was working in the enrollment management office at the time of his appointment.

In 1994, in his debut as Lackawanna Junior College’s head football coach, Duda led the Falcons to the Seaboard Conference Championship, an appearance in the country’s most prestigious junior college football bowl, the Midwest Bowl, and a 9-2 record. Duda was inducted into the University of Maryland Wall of Fame in April, 1994. He is currently the Head football coach at Lackawanna College.

Samuel L Bigler

"Sam" became one of our finest "Ambassadors of American Sports" while competing on the international circuit. While in high school, won varsity letters each in cross country and track and field, set school record in long jump, began lifting weights as an 85 pound 9th grader. While competing for York Barbell he advanced through seven classes to the heavyweight division and was 4-time National Collegiate Champion. 4-time All American (1969-70-71-72). Voted Outstanding Collegiate Lifter twice, holding records in 3 categories. A 2-time National AAU Champion, 5-time Pennsylvania State Champion 3-time All Army World Wide Gold Medalist. 1973 Pan American Champion and in 1976 a member of the US Olympic Team competing in Montreal.
